In this article we analyze the performance of the Italian healthcare system during the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The aim of this work is to investigate the presence of health imbalances (if any) at a territorial level, identifying common features in terms of virus incidence. This analysis is carried out through a comparison of the Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) distances of the historical series relating to admissions to intensive care units and hospitalzed patients for the 19 Italian regions and the two autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano. The series considered are not only a proxy of the spread of the virus diffusion, at regional level, but also provide a measure of the impact of the pandemic itself on the health care system. The analyses highlight affinities and divergences among Italian regions in relation to the incidence of the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on the results, it can be observed that Italy is characterized by several regional clusters, which are not all identifiable solely by geographical proximity, where the pandemic has produced different effects.
